Boston Museum Returns Ancient Gold Necklace to Turkey

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS—According to a CBS News report, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston has repatriated a 2,700-year-old necklace made of gold and carnelian to Turkey. Purchased from a London art dealer in 1982, the necklace is thought to have been looted from a tomb in western Turkey in 1976, where nearly identical beads and fittings have since been uncovered. “Those were placed into the local archaeological museum, and it seems that the elements that made up our necklace were probably smuggled out of the country and then strung together to form this piece of jewelry,” said Victoria Reed, the MFA Sadler Curator for Provenance. The museum also returned two bronze sculptures to Turkey last year. For more on the archaeology of Turkey, go to "Discovering a New Neolithic World."
